LEE P. SAUER, "The Herald-Republican" - Angola, IN - E-mail | Archives

space Lee P. Sauer is the editorial cartoonist for
The Herald-Republican in Angola, IN.

Lee P. Sauer tried a variety of careers after his 1980 graduation from Concordia University (River Forest, IL). He taught in elementary schools in Torrance, CA, and Fort Wayne, IN; clerked in an Indian village store in northern Alberta, Canada; worked as a deck hand on commercial fishing boats based in Kodiak, AK; wrote for a weekly newspaper in central Wisconsin; drew artwork for a Fort Wayne, IN, t-shirt screen printer; and dug graves for a Fort Wayne cemetery.

In 1987, Sauer moved to Auburn, IN, and began a 10-year stint with the Evening Star. During his Star years, Sauer developed several cartoon strips, including The Recyclone (www.recyclone.com); the strip appeared in several newspapers and the lead character came to life in recycling programs that became popular all over Indiana.

In 1995, Sauer struck out on his own. As a full-time, freelance writer/illustrator, he drew quick caricatures, wrote commissioned book-length biographies, and visited schools.

In February 2000, Sauer joined the staff of Tri-State University, Angola, IN, and currently serves as the school's director of public relations. About the same time, Sauer began drawing political cartoons for the Steuben County Herald Republican. Sauer and his wife, Suzann, live in Angola with their daughters MacKenzie, Morgan and Avrie.

Memberships: National Caricaturist Network and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

Among Lee's Awards:
First place winner of the Hoosier State Press Association Award
for Best Editorial Cartoonist, Weekly in 2000.
