Am I an Indiana Cartoonist? Well my ancestors have lived here since
1812 and I love to draw on napkins. You be the judge.
I was born in Lebanon. That's right! Lebanon, Indiana. I grew up in
Sheridan, Indiana and graduated from Anderson University in Anderson,
Indiana. I have a BA in graphic design and a minor in mass
communications.
In college, I had trouble deciding whether I liked to write or draw, so I did both. I will continue doing that until the career police force me to choose one.
In my junior year of college, I wanted to go to Florida for spring break. I drew a batch of cartoons and sent them
to a youth magazine. They bought six of the cartoons. It was my first
professional sale. I was hooked... plus I had enough money to get a tan in Clearwater, Florida.
I have contributed cartoons and articles to such magazines as
"Leadership Journal," "Marriage Partnership," and "Enrichment." I
regularly send materials to different religious publications. I created and illustrated characters for a children's church curriculum at Wesley Press. I worked for ten years as a book designer and illustrator for Macmillan Computer Publishing. I illustrated over twenty books for "The Complete Idiot's Guide" series.
Today, I am a graphic designer and illustrator for Warner Press. I create
and illustrate children's products for the Christian marketplace.
I have had an Internet site since 1997. On that site, I publish a weekly cartoon. You can find it at www.kevinspear.com
I also publish a weekly comic strip called "Off the Chip," for NAEN Ministries.
I belong to The Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) as well as American Christian Writers. |
