Gene graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis, and attended Franklin College on an academic scholarship.
Gene worked in advertising and creative graphics for 47 years. He was advertising manager fo group of food stores, copy and layout director for local chain of weekly newspapers (also drew editorial cartoons and took photos for them), was account executive for a small ad agency, was advertising manager for furniture store chain.
He did freelance magazine gag cartooning for several years and his work appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Look Magazine, Wall Street Journal, McCall's, Saturday Review, Christian Science Monitor, as well as in newspapers and magazines overseas and several book collections.
In a unique freelance arrangement, his editorial cartoons have appeared in the Noblesville Daily Ledger since 1976. When the Ledger and the Topics Newspapers were brought under the same ownership a few years later, his cartoons also appeared in those papers.
Gene retired for a few weeks in 2000, but started back to work. Since then, he's worked as a photographer, doing virtual home tours which run on the Internet.
Gene is married, the father of four, stepfather of five; between the branches of his extended family, he is grandfather to 14 (12 grandsons and two granddaughters).
